Marion, IL -- U.S. Representative Jerry Costello, (D-Ill) presented the Navy Cross military medal to Captain Robert W. Duncan (retd) on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at the Marion VA Medical Center.
Costello presented Captain Duncan the Navy Cross in a short ceremony held in the Skill Nursing Rehabilitation Facility at the Marion VA hospital in Marion, Illinois. Captain Duncan was awarded the Navy Cross, the highest Naval medal to be awarded, for actions he did in 1944. He was an original member of the Fighting Five and flew the F6F Grumman "Hellcat" Fighter from the U.S.S. Yorktown. He was also a Commander of the 8th Naval Recruiting Area.
Costello said "that among the privileges I have as a U.S. Congressman is to honor the service of America's veterans. I am particularly proud to award this medal to Captain Duncan who has given so much for his country."
