As a congressman, I always have a lot to do! I work in the office and have many places to go and lots of people to meet each day. I thought that maybe you would be interested to know what a normal day is like for me. So, I have put up two different schedules. Both of them are real. One is a schedule for when I am in Kansas. The other is a schedule for when I am in Washington, DC. What is your regular day like? Do you like it? Is it more or less busy than mine?
In Kansas
8:00 AM - 8:30 AM: Travel. I leave my house and start heading off for a special event!
8:30 AM - 9:30 AM: Middle School visit in Kansas City. I talk to a class of students learning about the government. It's always a lot of fun meeting and talking to students about our country.
Here I am at an elementary school talking about how important service and hard work are to our country.
9:30 AM - 10:00 AM: Travel. I drive from the middle school to the office.
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM: Office time. I spend some time reading letters, talking to people, and getting ready for the rest of the day.
11:00 AM - 11:30 AM: More traveling!
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM: Speech to Gardner Chamber of Commerce. I talk to some adults about what I am doing in Washington, DC. Near the end, I answer any questions that people have for me.
1:00 PM - 1:30 PM: Travel even more!
1:30 PM - 2:00 PM: Animal Health Tour. I get to visit a scientific lab and take a tour. The lab works a lot on animal health. When I'm there, I talk to the people who invited me about animal health. I plan to meet these people again tomorrow night to talk more.
In this picture, I am touring a hospital that is being remodeled.
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM: Travel back to the office and eat lunch on the way. Since I'm busy, I can't forget to eat and stay energized!
3:00 PM - 4:45 PM: More office time. I read more letters and talk about bills with people in my office. The staff in my office keep me up-to-date and ready for anything. I couldn't be a good congressman without their help.
4:45 PM - 5:00 PM: Travel. I get back in the car and head off for my next event.
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Awards ceremony. I present awards to high school students who have done a lot to help their communities. It's a nice feeling to thank these students for their kindness and hard work. Maybe I'll get to thank you some day.
6:00 PM - 6:30 PM: Travel one more time.
6:30 PM - 9:00 PM: Meeting and dinner. I go to a special dinner where several people talk about medicine and how important it is to respect the patients. It's a very important issue and I'm glad that I got to hear more about it.
9:00 PM: Done! My day is over. I go home and get some sleep to get ready for another exciting day!
In Washington, DC
8:00 AM - 8:45 AM: Breakfast. While I eat, some people from the military talk to me about their problems.
8:45 AM - 10:00 AM: Meeting. I meet with several other congresspeople to talk about important issues for the country. We also talk about things happening in Congress and figure out what we should do next.
Here, I am talking about how our country spends money. Many other congresspeople joined me.
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM: Administrative time. I spend time in my office signing letters, reading bills, and finishing other important jobs.
11:30 AM - 12:45 PM: Three meetings! One with the Air Force, another with eye doctors, and another with a group called the Urban League. All three groups talk about things important to them. I listen and keep everything they say in mind.
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM: Lunch. This is a special lunch where I eat with new congresspeople and welcome them to Congress.
2:30 PM - 4:00 PM: Three more meetings. This time, I meet bankers, students, and other people from Kansas.
4:00 PM - 4:15 PM: Award ceremony. My office receives a wonderful award for having a great website!
4:15 PM - 5:15 PM: Two more meetings. I meet with people who talk about safe medicine and products.
Another congressman and I talk to a man named Gary Senise about veterans and how we can honor their bravery in war.
5:15 PM: My schedule is over, but I have lots of work left to do in my office and in Congress!
