Belleville - Virgil Hallberg, an area U.S. Army veteran, was honored on Friday, April 11, 2008 by U.S. Congressman Jerry Costello, (D-IL). Congressman Costello presented military medals to Mr. Hallberg at his Belleville district office.
Mr. Hallberg, of Cahokia, is a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He participated in several campaigns in the Pacific Theater, including the Philippine Islands, New Guinea and Luzon. Mr. Hallberg served in the Army for over 22 years before retiring in 1963.
Congressman Costello presented Mr. Hallberg with the following medals: the Good Conduct Medal & Clasp Silver 1 Loop, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the American Defense Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal & Bronze Star Attachment (Double) & Arrowhead, the National Defense Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon & Bronze Star Attachment (Single) and the Honorable Service Lapel Button.
