Herseth Statement on Inclusion of Disaster Aid in Supplemental

March 15, 2007, Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth released the following statement today upon passage of agricultural disaster assistance from the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee:

“I’m very pleased that disaster assistance was included in today’s bill. This is a much deserved and long overdue victory for South Dakota’s farmers and ranchers, who have suffered through years of severe drought. I have been urging House leadership to address this issue for almost two years. A drought is not as dramatic or sudden as other natural disasters, but it is no less devastating – and today’s inclusion of disaster aid is an important recognition of that.”

The inclusion of drought relief represents the culmination of a lengthy battle in the House. Last year, despite a Presidential veto threat and the strong opposition of House Republican leadership, Herseth secured the support of Democratic leadership for drought relief and led an effort in the House to collect more than 200 bipartisan signatures in support of the bill.
