HERSETH APPLAUDS COMMITMENT TO AGRICULTURE DISASTER ASSISTANCE Speaker Pelosi Pledges Relief for Drought Victims March 5, 2007, Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth released the following statement upon last weekend’s announcement that the supplemental appropriations bill will include disaster assistance for drought-stricken farmers. Herseth, who serves as co-chair of the House Rural Working Group, said, “Farm and ranch families across South Dakota have clearly experienced a severe natural disaster in recent years, and I’ve been working to convince my colleagues in the House that prompt federal assistance is critical. Drought may not be as dramatic as a hurricane or tornado, but it is no less a disaster and its victims are no less deserving of our assistance.” The announcement was made by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the National Farmers Union annual convention. Speaker Pelosi appointed Herseth as co-chair of the House Rural Working Group in 2004. In that role, Herseth works to articulate and prioritize the needs of rural America to urban and suburban members ofc the House of Representatives. Herseth cautioned that the terms of the package have not yet been released, adding, “I look forward to working with my colleagues to craft a package that adequately and appropriately reflects the severity of the conditions producers have been suffering through over the past several years.” # # # Congresswoman
