HERSETH RECEIVES VETERANS SERVICE AWARD

Recognition for Work to Improve Veterans’ Employment Services

March 2, 2007, Washington D.C. – U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth was honored with the Lane Evans Veteran Entrepreneur Public Service Award at a ceremony in Washington D.C. Thursday night. The award, presented by the nonprofit Veterans Corporation, recognizes Rep. Herseth’s work in improving veterans’ employment services. This is the first year that the award has been presented.

Rep. Herseth serves on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee and is the Chairwoman of its Subcommittee for Economic Opportunity. The award is named for former Rep. Lane Evans, the immediate past Chairman of the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

“Once their brave and honorable service is complete, veterans from South Dakota and from all around the country deserve to receive all the services and benefits they were promised.” said Rep. Herseth. “I am proud to work on behalf of these American heroes, particularly this new generation of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.”

Herseth’s Subcommittee has jurisdiction over a range of veterans and servicemember programs designed to help those returning from military service readjust to civilian life. As chair, Herseth sets the subcommittee’s agenda with respect to a number of programs including vocation rehabilitation, home loans, education assistance, entrepreneurship incentives and servicemembers civil relief.
