HERSETH INTRODUCES BILL CHARTERING NATIONAL AMERICAN INDIAN VETERANS ASSOCIATION February 26, 2007 –U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth has introduced legislation to grant a federal charter to the National American Indian Veterans Association. The bill is HR 637. Herseth said, “Native Americans have long answered the call to serve in our nation’s military. In fact, more than one-third of all able-bodied Indian men between the ages of 18 and 50 served our country in World War II. Even today, Native Americans have the highest rate of military service of any ethnic group in the country. The honorable and courageous service of Native Americans in our nation’s military deserves this special recognition.” The proposed chartered organization would be akin to other veterans institutions representing specific groups, such as the Catholic War Veterans, Italian American War Veterans of the USA, Jewish War Veterans of the USA, National Association of Black Veterans and Polish Legion of American Veterans. Each of those groups was specifically chartered by Congress. “I believe the guidance and collected wisdom of the National American Indian Veterans Association will enable America to better honor its commitments to Native American veterans and their families,” Herseth continued. “In doing so, it will strengthen Native Americans’ long and exceptional tradition of military service to our nation.” Herseth is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats committed to fiscal discipline and strong national security, and is co-chair of the Rural Working Group, which is dedicated to raise the profile of issues important to rural America. # # #
