REP. HERSETH NAMED TO HOUSE NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE

Committee Oversees Forests, Native American Issues

February 2, 2007 – U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth announced that she will serve on the House Natural Resources Committee during the 110th Congress, continuing her service on that committee. The Natural Resources Committee has jurisdiction over several areas of vital importance to South Dakota, including Native American issues, water resource development and forest health.

Herseth said, “I am pleased to be able to represent South Dakota’s interests on the Natural Resources Committee once again. I will use this assignment to continue to advocate for South Dakota’s nine Sioux Tribes and advance common sense forest policy for the Black Hills.”

Herseth will serve on the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Parks, Forests, and Public Lands. National parks, such as Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and national forests, such as the Black Hills National Forest, fall under the purview of the subcommittee.

As an active member last Congress, Representative Herseth requested and received a subcommittee field hearing which took place in Hill City, South Dakota. She also helped craft and served as an original cosponsor of legislation to strengthen management options following a catastrophic forest event like fire or beetle infestation. That bill ultimately passed the full House.

Herseth is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats committed to fiscal discipline and strong national security, and is co-chair of the Rural Working Group, which is dedicated to raise the profile of issues important to rural America.
