REP. HERSETH RETAINS SEAT ON HOUSE AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE

Committee Will Craft 2007 Farm Bill

January 17, 2007 –
U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth will serve on the House Agriculture Committee during the 110th Congress, retaining a seat she has held since joining the House of Representatives, and ensuring that South Dakota will have a strong voice as the 2007 Farm Bill is written. The committee has jurisdiction over a wide range of agriculture and rural development issues, including the reauthorization of federal farm programs important to South Dakota included in the Farm Bill.

Herseth said, “There is no single piece of legislation that affects South Dakota more than the Farm Bill. I’m pleased to continue to serve on this crucial committee and to continue to represent the interests of South Dakota producers as the new Farm Bill is crafted throughout the year.”

Herseth will serve on two important Agriculture Subcommittees: Conservation, Credit, Energy, and Research; and General Farm Commodities and Risk Management.

The Conservation, Credit, Energy, and Research subcommittee is a newly configured subcommittee that has jurisdiction over renewable energy, conservation programs and agricultural research.

The General Farm Commodities and Risk Management subcommittee has jurisdiction over products and markets related to important South Dakota commodities like corn, wheat and soybeans.

Herseth is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats committed to fiscal discipline and strong national security, and is co-chair of the Rural Working Group, which is dedicated to raise the profile of issues important to rural America.
