Release HERSETH STATEMENT ON IRAQ PROPOSAL January 10, 2007, Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth earlier today attended a White House briefing with Dr. J.D. Crouch, Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor, and General Kevin Bergner, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director of Iraq. Following that meeting, Herseth released the following statement regarding the President’s new proposal for adding troops to Iraq: “I appreciate the President’s willingness to reach out to the American people as well as his acknowledgement that we need to make changes to our strategy in Iraq. However, I remain skeptical of the decision to send thousands of additional troops to Iraq at this time. I have serious concerns regarding the ability of Iraqi security forces to act as a reliable partner in the effort to secure Baghdad, as well as concerns about the impact a large escalation will have on our overall military readiness. The Iraqi government needs to understand they are on borrowed time, and they must begin taking greater control over the future of their own country. I remain unconvinced that a large new deployment of troops to Baghdad will further that goal at this point.” # # #
