Moore announces military academy recruits from Third District

(OVERLAND PARK, KAN.) – Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District -- Kansas) announced Tuesday that Adam Lary, Overland Park; Daniel DeJong, Overland Park; Ashley Self, Gardner; and Lucille McMinn, Lenexa, have been accepted into U.S. service academies. The four high school seniors were nominated by Congressman Moore as a part of their application process.

“The extensive application process is designed to select those who will excel both as students and officers,” Moore said. “These four students have proven themselves consistently through academics, civic engagement and physical ability. I congratulate them on this well-deserved honor and look forward to hearing about their many future successes.”

Adam Lary, a senior at Blue Valley High School, has been accepted into West Point Military Academy. Lary is editor of the school paper and an active sportsman, participating in soccer, track, martial arts and hunting. He has also participated in engineering programs and hopes to pursue a career in engineering.

Daniel DeJong has been accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy. DeJong is a senior at Blue Valley Northwest High School where he is a member of the track, football and wrestling teams, as well as the school marching band. He is an Eagle Scout and a member of the National Honors Society.

Ashley Self, a senior at Gardner-Edgerton High School, has also been accepted into West Point Military Academy. In addition to her academic achievements, including two years on the National Honor Roll, Self is heavily involved in extracurricular activities, participating in the track team, honors choir, and the International and Thespian Clubs.

Lucille McMinn has been accepted to the U.S. Air Force Academy. McMinn, who recently moved to Kansas from North Carolina, is a senior at Olathe Northwest High School. McMinn plays lacrosse, serves as an officer in the Art Club, and volunteers for Habitat for Humanity.

Cadets will have a week of intensive orientation this summer before beginning their studies in the fall.
