Moore honored for dedication to public transportation

(OVERLAND PARK, KAN.) – The Kansas Public Transit Association (KPTA) honored Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District-KS) with an appreciation award for his work as an advocate for public transportation in Kansas. Marsha Bernard, Unified Government of Wyandotte County/KCK transportation director and past KPTA president, nominated Moore for the award.

“Since being elected to Congress, I have consistently requested federal assistance for a light rail project for the Kansas City area,” Moore said. “Public transportation is an important way to reduce traffic congestion, maintain a clean environment and provide a reliable way for people to travel.”

Moore has been instrumental in securing federal funding for public transportation projects in Kansas. Last week, the House of Representatives approved funding for several of his projects, including:

* $200,000 for security improvements for the Nolte Transit Center in Johnson County

* $490,000 for the Job Access/Reverse Commute program for the Mid America Regional Council (MARC), which includes Johnson County

* $3 million for buses and facilities for the Kansas City Area Transit Authority

* $500,000 for the replacement of buses for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/KCK

* $488,000 for the Job Access/Reverse Commute program for the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/KCK * $400,000 for a maintenance facility for the Lawrence Transit System

The award was presented to Moore on Monday during KPTA's 2003 Annual Meeting & Expo at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel.

KPTA is a voluntary association [501(c)6] of Kansas public transportation operators and agencies interested in public transportation issues. At the present time KPTA membership includes members in 21 states and Canada.
