Effect of Alternative Silvicultural Treatments on Snow Accumulation in Lodgepole Pine Stands

In a fuel reduction/restoration experiment, lodgepole pine stands were thinned with residual trees left relatively evenly distributed or in uncut patches. Researchers found that more snow accumulated in evenly thinned stands compared to patchily thinned stands or unthinned controls, demonstrating that spatial distribution of fuels treatments can have consequences for watershed hydrology. See Woods, S.W. et al., 2006. Snow accumulation in thinned lodgepole pine stands, Montana, U.S.A. Forest Ecology and Management, in press.
