Research at the unit is focused on two areas:

Decision Tools and Analyses   - Improve the information and techniques available to assess the economic efficiency aspects of sustainable forest management, especially in high priority situations.  Research and development efforts pertaining to this problem separate into two subproblems: (1) Analysis for Fire Management and (2) Decision Support Systems.

Analysis for Fire Management

*  Expenditures on Large Wildland Fires

*  Annual Wildland Fire Suppression Expenditures

*  Decision-making and Expenditures on Large Wildland Fires

*  Performance Measures for Wildland Fire

*  Improving Identification of Values at Risk

*  Biomass Utilization

Decision Support Systems

*  PLATA: Project Level Analysis of Treatment Alternatives

*  MAGIS: Multiple-resource Analysis and Geographic Information System

*  MAGIS eXpress

*  WATSED -- Hydrologic and Sediment Modeling (with NORTHERN REGION)

Sustainability of Local and Regional Economies  - We seek to improve our understanding of the economic effects of forest management on the economic sustainability of local and regional economies.  Research in this area will promote Sustainable Forest and Rangeland Management by contributing to the application of sub-national Criteria & Indicators of sustainable economic systems.
