International Programs

The International Cooperation Unit at IITF serves as a base for Latin American and US managers and researchers to work cooperatively.  The unit uses research information from IITF as well as the land management skills of the National Forest System, specially the Caribbean National Forest, to provide technical information and tools for technology transfer and outreach.

The USDA Forest Service and USAID fund the program.  International cooperation specialists provide information in areas such as ecosystem management, silviculture, forest utilization, management of parks and protected areas and other fields of renewable resource management.  This programs contribute directly to the international cooperation mission of the IITF that is to exchange knowledge critical to sustainability of tropical ecosystems and their contribution to humankind through demonstration, training, science exchange, and technology transfer.

Clients of IITF include international agencies such as FAO, government and non-government organizations, and private entities.  New information and experiences are generated through research, projects, technical assistance, visitation to the IITF and cooperation program managers participate in the selection  of projects and are involved in their planning, execution, monitoring, and assessment.
