Chemistry Laboratory

Located in Rio Piedras, the IITF chemical lab has the capacity to analyze a variety of standard elements and in an average year conducts over 47,000 analyses on samples collected in tropical ecosystems around the world. The majority of samples are done on plants and soils although the laboratory is expanding its capacity to analyze air and water. Typical analyses include acid extractable totals and available elements of aluminum, calcium, phosphorus, iron, manganese, potassium, magnesium, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and pH. The laboratory has four full time chemists and
analytical equipment that includes a Bechman-Direct Current Plasma analyzer, a LECO Carbon-Nitrogen_sulfur analyzer, a Alpkem-rapid Flow Analyzer, a Centurion-Vacuum Extractor for Soil, a Dionex-Cromatograph, a Shimadzu-Gas Cromatograph, and a Tecator-Block Digestor.
