I-55 Interstate WideningEstimated Total Cost: $300 million
This project involves widening a 15-mile stretch of I-55 from two lanes to three in each direction ā from I-80 north to Naperville Road. Carrying some 58,000 vehicles per day, I-55 has serious congestion problems where the highway contracts from three lanes down to two at Naperville Road.
In August 2005, President Bush signed into law the federal transportation bill H.R. 3, the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, and Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users of 2005 (SAFETEA-LU). The law will provide over $1.5 billion for highway projects in Illinois. Around $4.4 million out of the $12.828 million set aside for the 13th District went toward the Iā55 widening and interchange construction project. In addition, former Illinois Governor George Ryan set aside $8 million in state funds to expedite an engineering study that would look at continuing three lanes in each direction from Naperville Road south to I-80 in 2001.
