Tips for Saving Money and Fuel | Print |
There's no question that outrageous gas prices are placing heavy financial burdens on Hoosiers. I am working hard in Congress to bring consumers immediate relief at the pump, as well as supporting long-term policies to reduce America's reliance on oil. But, with the summer driving season in full swing, consumers can also take steps to use less fuel and save money at the pump. This page is designed to help you do just that with helpful tips on finding the cheapest gas stations in your area, conserving fuel, and getting the most for your money.

Finding the cheapest gas stations
According to experts, the price difference between the most expensive and cheapest gas stations in a community can be as much as forty cents. AAA maintains a Fuel Price Finder with the latest fuel prices at more than 100,000 stations across the country.

When to buy gas
According to GasPrice Watch, the best time to buy gas is Wednesday because, after an increase for the weekend, prices generally settle and hit their low point by midweek.

Driving Economically
Slow down: the ideal speed for maximum fuel efficiency is 55mph. Also try to avoid jackrabbit starts and sudden stops. The Alliance to Save Energy estimates that drivers can save up to $260 per year by making these simple adjustments to their driving styles.

Keep your tires properly inflated, and you can improve your gas mileage by about 3 percent. Check the pressure of your vehicle's tires at least once a month with a tire gauge. The owner's manual explains how to do it.

Check your owner's manual to be sure you are using the recommended grade of motor oil. This simple change can increase your gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent.

Remove extra weight from the trunk or cargo area of your vehicle. A heavier vehicle uses more gas.

Take the Drive Smarter Challenge
The Alliance to Save Energy recently launched a fuel-efficiency challenge to consumers who want to save money and fuel. The website features money-saving driving and vehicle maintenance tips, an interactive program that allows users to select 1-6 fuel efficiency actions and calculate their individual savings, as well as a running tally of savings by everyone who has taken the challenge.
