Since its creation in 1935, Social Security has been an American success story; lifting our seniors from poverty and providing hope for our disabled. For decades, it has guaranteed a life-long, defined source of income American families can count on. I am dedicated to protecting and strengthening that guarantee for today and tomorrow's retirees.
There is no question Social Security faces financial challenges that threaten the programs' solvency and benefits for future generations. However, I do not believe privatizing the program and asking seniors to gamble their retirement security on the stock market is the answer. Not only would privatization cut gaping holes in the Social Security safety net, it is projected to increase our national debt by $5 trillion over just 20 years.
I look forward to working with members from both sides of the aisle in passing common sense reforms that protect the guaranteed benefit and ensure Social Security's sustainability for generations to come.
