Tips for Hunters and Sportsmen | Print |
Hunting is a way of life in Indiana; a proud tradition passed down from generation to generation. As a former Sheriff, I believe that all gun owners have a responsibility to ensure their firearms are used safely. While hunting a fence row in Gibson County over the holidays, I thought it might be a good idea to add a Tips for Hunters and Sportsmen page to the website. This page contains basic gun safety rules, as well as important phone numbers and information about hunting and fishing in the 8th District.

Basic Gun Safety Rules

  • Make sure the gun is always pointed in a safe direction. The muzzle of the gun should never be pointed at you or anyone else.

  • Always be sure the gun is unloaded until you are ready to use it. Be sure the safety is on, there is no magazine in the gun, and there is no bullet in the throat.

  • Be sure you are using the correct ammunition for your gun. Using improper ammunition can cause injury and possibly death.

  • Know the range of your firearm.

  • Shooters should wear proper clothing, as well as ear and eye protection to avoid injury.

  • Don't put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

  • It is important to clean your gun after each use. Firing a dirty gun can cause a malfunction, sometimes injuring the shooter.
