Summer Language Program

NSA offers foreign language students the opportunity to sharpen their language skills in reading and listening to a professional level. As an apprentice to senior NSA language analysts, you'll gain intensive experience exploiting communications for vital intelligence missions. You'll also have the unique opportunity for multi-dimensional and cross-disciplinary growth in analytical skills.

The Summer Language Program is currently hiring students studying Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Urdu, and Persian Farsi.

Applications are accepted August 1st - October 31st of each year.

About the Program
The summer language program is a flexible two-year summer language program that lasts 12 weeks each summer. It is intended for language students who have taken at least one language course per semester. The program begins the summer after your sophomore year and, if mutually agreeable, continues during the following summer after your junior year. At the end of your second summer, a conditional job offer may be given for you to join NSA after graduation.

The first summer for each student includes:

  • A language proficiency level assessment
  • A language mentor assigned from NSA's Language Analysis team
  • Up to six weeks of tailored language training
  • Relevant job-specific briefings
  • Up to six weeks of job-specific and language-related training

The second summer focuses more on the actual work and includes:

  • A language proficiency level reassessment
  • The same language mentor, if possible, or another as appropriate
  • Up to four weeks of tailored language training
  • Up to eight weeks of hands-on operational experience

Salary
Students are paid a competitive salary commensurate with their education level.

  • Participation in Agency-wide extracurricular programs
  • Those who attend schools in excess of 75 miles from Fort Meade, MD, are eligible for a round trip airline ticket to and from school or mileage reimbursement up to the cost of a government issued airline ticket.

Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be eligible to be granted a security clearance
  • Must have taken at least one language course per semester
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Must have at least 3.5 average in all language/area studies

How to Apply
Applications must be submitted online or postmarked on or before October 31st. Applications received after the deadline, as well as incomplete packets, will not be considered.

To be considered for the summer language program, you must submit a complete application packet that includes:

  • A resume
  • A list of your current fall semester courses and your proposed spring course schedule
  • Unofficial transcripts*
