Updated Fall 2008 Courses
A few courses have changed from the printed catalog:
- CS 101 (Intro to Computers) instructor is now Dr. Knoke.
- CS 442 (Networks) has been cancelled due to low enrollment.
- CS 631 (Advanced Languages) instructor is now Dr. Roth.
Introduction
The UAF Department of Computer Science offers undergraduate and graduate
degrees in computer science and software engineering. Research interests in
computer science include computer security, computer graphics, parallel
computation, databases, expert systems, software engineering, simulation, networks,
formal language theory and computability. We focus on the hard problems in programming
computer software, unlike electrical or computer engineering which focus more on computer hardware circuit
design.

Computer Science is the study of information handling and its application
to the problems of the world. Computing is widely used in support of activities in science,
engineering, business, law, medicine, education, and the social sciences.
The Department of Computer Science is administered within the
College of Natural Science
and Mathematics. The UAF computer science B.S. program is
accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.
Statement of Mission
The Department of Computer Science at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks has an important but simple mission as given by three primary
goals:
- TEACHING: To train new computer scientists and teachers of the
computer sciences,
- RESEARCH: To add to the existing base of knowledge in the computer
sciences through research and other scholarly activities, and
- SERVICE: To provide the software and expertise needed for
scientific, technological, and humanitarian progress.
Campus
The Fairbanks campus is the oldest unit of the University of Alaska
system. It is the primary residential university, houses the system's
administrative seat, offers the only doctoral level degrees, and
provides the only graduate training in the mathematical sciences. The
2,250-acre campus serves over 9,000 students of whom 8% are graduate
students. The campus is located on a ridge overlooking the City of
Fairbanks and the Tanana River Valley. Several scientific research
institutes of national and international reknown are located on campus.
A number of state and federal agencies also maintain research facilities
here.
Community
The City of Fairbanks, located four miles east of campus, is the trade
center for Interior Alaska. Road and rail transportation give easy
access to the Alaska Range and to many of the towns and cities of
Alaska. To the north are the Yukon River and the rugged Brooks Range,
with the oil-rich North Slope beyond. There are many excellent cultural
and recreational facilities in the area.
