The NCUA Board established the Office of Inspector General (OIG) March 20, 1989, in response to 1988 Inspector General Act amendments. The amendments required NCUA and 32 other small federal agencies to establish and maintain OIG offices. At NCUA, the existing Office of Internal Audit was renamed the OIG.
