Fortenberry Honors Veterans and Military Families

Washington, DC - Congressman Jeff Fortenberry today honored veterans of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, as well as recognized the 60th anniversary of the United States Air Force by supporting four pieces of legislation.

“The men and women of our Armed Forces, both those currently serving and those who have served in the past, have sacrificed greatly and deserve our continued appreciation and respect,” Fortenberry said.

Fortenberry supported the following House legislation.

H.Res. 326 commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

H.Con.Res. 207 recognizes the 60th anniversary of the United States Air Force as an independent military service.

H.Res. 443 recognizes the service of the 65th Infantry Borinqueneers during the Korean War. The 65th Infantry Borinqueneers was an all-volunteer Puerto Rican Regiment of the U.S. Army, whose motto was “Honor and Fidelity.” It served in World War 1, World War II, and the Korean War. The measure also honors the people of Puerto Rico who continue to serve and volunteer for service in the Armed Forces and make sacrifices for the country, and commends all efforts to promote and preserve the history of the 65th Infantry Borinqueneers.

H.Res. 604 expresses the nation’s sincerest appreciation and thanks for the service of the members of the 303rd Bombardment Group (Heavy) upon the occasion of the final reunion of the 303rd Bomb Group (H) Association. The 303rd Bombardment Group was an Eighth Air Force, B-17 Bomber Group stationed in Molesworth, England, during World War II. The members of the 303rd Bombardment Group lived up to their motto, “Might in Flight,” with their record 364 combat missions. One of the bombers of the 303rd, the B-17 Thunderbird, was one of the few B-17s to fly more than 100 combat missions.

Fortenberry also today co-sponsored H.Res. 605, a measure that recognizes “Gold Star Mothers.” These courageous women have lost a son or daughter in service to our country. “Gold Star Mothers have made the supreme sacrifice for this nation,” Fortenberry said. “We should honor their patriotism.” Gold Star Mothers Day is September 30, 2007.
