Immediate Release Contact: Betsy Hart October 1, 2008, Washington, DC-Today, Rep. Herseth Sandlin announced that the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe is the recipient of a U.S. Department of Justice Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Program grant in the amount of $500,000. This funding will be used to upgrade and expand the Sisseton-Wahpeton Detention Center. “Upgrading correctional facilities in Indian Country is essential to not only reduce crime, but also to keep law enforcement officials and detainees safe,” Rep. Herseth Sandlin said. “This funding, which will be used for improved indoor and outdoor lighting and security doors as well as additional holding cells and space for Tribal Court, will make the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Reservation a safer and more secure place to live, work and raise a family.” The grant will be used to renovate and construct facilities to house juveniles and adult offenders that are appropriate for the population, supportive of cultural and traditional values, safe and secure when completed and in compliance with the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ standards regarding correctional operations, programs, and design. ### |
