AVON TEACHER TO COMPETE FOR SCIENCE TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD September 17th, Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Herseth Sandlin congratulated Avon High School 10th Grade Science Teacher Paul Kuhlman, who has been named one of five national finalists for the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge’s Teacher Competition “Science Teacher of the Year” award. NASA will host the competition finals from October 4-6, 2008 at the Goddard Space Flight Center, located near Washington, D.C. “Identifying, motivating and training tomorrow’s workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is essential to our future,” said Rep. Herseth Sandlin. “I remember well a number of those special teachers that made a real difference in my formative years by inspiring and challenging me on a daily basis in the classroom. Clearly, Mr. Kuhlman is one of those special teachers and represents some of the best of what South Dakota has to offer as he inspires a passion for science in his students.” During the competition, teachers will demonstrate their science prowess in a series of individual and team challenges focused on this year’s theme, “The Science of Space,” in front of a live audience. Meanwhile, ten student finalists will contend for a specially selected set of prizes and recognition as “America’s Top Young Scientist of the Year.” For more information on all the finalists, please visit: www.DiscoveryEducation.com/YoungScientist. # # # Congresswoman
