HERSETH SANDLIN ANNOUNCES $500,000 FOR YANKTON SIOUX TRIBE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES September 11th, 2008, Washington, DC-Today, Rep. Herseth Sandlin announced that the Yankton Sioux Tribe is the recipient of a U.S. Department of Justice Correctional Facilities on Tribal Lands Program grant in the amount of $500,000. This funding will allow the Yankton Sioux Tribe to renovate and construct facilities to house juveniles. “One of my top priorities in Congress is making Indian Country a safer place to live, work and raise a family,” Rep. Herseth Sandlin said. “Providing funding for the updating and renovating of correctional facilities is an important part of improving the complex and broken system of law and order on reservations. This grant will help the Yankton Sioux Tribe law enforcement keep their community safe.” Currently, Yankton Sioux Tribe law enforcement officials must transport juvenile offenders to a police department five hours away, taking officials ten hours, round-trip. As a result of the burden transporting juvenile offenders places on the tribe’s law enforcement budget, courts only sentence juveniles in extreme cases. The grant will be used to renovate and construct facilities to house juveniles that are appropriate for the population, supportive of cultural and traditional values, safe and secure when completed and in compliance with the Bureau of Indian Affairs’ standards regarding correctional operations, programs, and design. ###
