SANDLIN SECURES FUNDING FOR TRIBAL LAW ENFORCEMENT June 26th, 2008, Washington, DC- Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee approved funding for the Commerce, Justice and Science Appropriations bill. Included in the legislation is critical funding requested by Rep. Herseth Sandlin to enhance law enforcement initiatives on both the Pine Ridge and Cheyenne River Reservations in South Dakota. Herseth Sandlin said, “With increasing crime presenting a growing obstacle to community safety and economic development in Indian Country, support for law enforcement efforts is more critical now than ever before. This funding will help ensure that law enforcement officials will have the manpower and resources necessary to do their jobs effectively.” The funding requested by Herseth Sandlin that was included in the bill includes: Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety -The Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, protecting 38,000 tribal members in two counties on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, received $250,000 to maintain the current number of law enforcement officers. The funding will support officer salaries, training, equipment and related expenses. Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe 911 System Support - The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe received $250,000 to support and maintain the only dispatch center on this 2.8 million acre reservation. The dispatch center plays a crucial role in maintaining communications among various federal, state, and local law enforcement entities. The funds will be used for personnel training, equipment maintenance and related expenses. ### Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin serves South Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives. She is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of moderate Democrats committed to fiscal discipline and strong national security, and is co-chair of the Rural Working Group, which is dedicated to raising the profile of issues important to rural America. She also serves on three committees vital to South Dakota’s interests: Agriculture, Veterans’ Affairs and Natural Resources. In the 110th Congress, Rep. Herseth Sandlin was one of only 15 members appointed to serve on the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. |
