HERSETH SANDLIN STATEMENT ON REOPENING OF SOUTH KOREA TO U.S. BEEF April 18, 2007, Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin today commented on the announcement that South Korea will reopen its market to U.S. beef imports. “This is an overdue, but welcome announcement that reflects the fact that livestock producers in South Dakota and across the country produce the highest quality, safest beef in the world. Renewed access to what was once the third-largest export market for U.S. beef and beef products is the right decision, and it represents an important economic victory for our domestic producers.” South Korea implemented a ban on imports of U.S. beef in December of 2003. Before the ban, South Korea was the third-largest export market for U.S. beef and beef products. Although South Korea partially reopened its market to deboned beef less than 30 months of age in January 2006, the reopening was subject to multiple interruptions and has effectively been closed since 2007. # # # Congresswoman
