HERSETH SANDLIN QUESTIONS HEADS OF BIG FIVE OIL COMPANIES

Focuses on Increased Use and Availability of Domestically Produced, Renewable Biofuels

April 1st, 2008, Washington, DC-U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin questioned the heads of the “big five” oil companies today as part of a hearing for the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming. The hearing was entitled “Drilling for Answers: Oil Company Profits, Runaway Prices and the Pursuit of Alternatives” and featured testimony from the following witnesses:

  • Mr. J. Stephen Simon, Senior Vice President, Exxon Mobil Corp.
  • Mr. John Hofmeister, President, Shell Oil Company
  • Mr. Robert A. Malone, Chairman and President, BP America, Inc.
  • Mr. Peter Robertson, Vice Chairman, Chevron
  • Mr. John Lowe, Executive Vice President, ConocoPhillips

In her opening statement and her time questioning the witnesses, Herseth Sandlin focused on the companies’ business practices and attitudes towards renewable biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel. In particular, she asked the company heads to justify their position that fuels blends with higher than 10% ethanol, like E20, would have adverse effects on the price of food. Additionally, she asked if the companies were undertaking initiatives to increase the availability of E85.

Rep. Herseth Sandlin was appointed to serve on the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming in recognition of her leadership on and advocacy for the expanded production and use of renewable biofuels. In the comprehensive energy legislation that was signed into law in late 2007, she advocated strongly for an aggressive increase in the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS), which requires the use of at least 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels by 2022 – a significant increase in both quantity and years compared to the previous requirement calling for 7.5 billion gallons by 2012.
