HERSETH SANDLIN COMMENT ON FARM BILL EXTENSION “I'm pleased that both the House and Senate have agreed to pass a short-term extension of the Farm Bill. It's a sign that folks are still at the table and we are still making progress. Like many producers and families in South Dakota, I remain frustrated that political games have delayed the process up until now. “Unfortunately, President Bush has held a clear veto threat over the farm bill since the House first passed its version almost eight months ago. He reiterated that threat when the Senate passed their farm bill three months ago. And failing a veto override, the fact is that we can't enact a law without the President's signature. I commend Chairman Peterson and Ranking Member Goodlatte for their bipartisan work in breaking the logjam, and now it's a matter of coming up with the details about how we pay for the bill. “Once the White House signs off on a funding package, I am optimistic the bill will move quickly. I’m hopeful that the administration will recognize the efforts made to acknowledge their concerns and will come to the negotiating table in good faith, so we can work out a reasonable compromise that has a chance to become law.” ### |
