HERSETH SANDLIN HELPS PASS ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE

Will Provide ‘Timely, Temporary, Targeted’ Relief to South Dakota Families; Help Stimulate Economy

February 7, 2008, Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin joined with an overwhelming bipartisan majority in sending an economic stimulus package to the president for his signature. The package was crafted in response to a slowed economy.

The bill provides a rebate up to $600 per individual and $1,200 per married couple, plus an additional $300 per child. The rebate begins to phase out above incomes of $75,000 for a single filer and $150,000 for a married couple. The exact amount received depends on each individual or couple’s circumstance, but all Americans who earned at least $3,000 in 2007 will get at least $300 per indivdual and $600 per couple, plus a child tax credit of $300 per child.

The tax rebate will also include an estimated 20 million seniors relying only on Social Security, 250,000 disabled veterans, and survivors of disabled veterans. Rebates will go to anyone who receives at least $3,000 in Social Security income, self-employment income or veterans’ disability payments (including payments to survivors of disabled veterans).

Herseth Sandlin said, “Today, Congress took an important step in helping to strengthen and stimulate the economy by providing families, seniors and veterans a rapid infusion of funds to help them meet their everyday needs. I’m pleased the House and Senate, along with the White House, were able to put partisanship aside and quickly reach an agreement to move forward with a timely, targeted, and temporary stimulus package.”

Provisions affecting small businesses and the housing market remain unchanged from the original House package.
