HERSETH SANDLIN REACTION TO PRESIDENT'S FINAL STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

Washington D.C., January 28, 2008 – U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin released the following statement in response to President Bush's final State of the Union address to Congress this evening:

"I was glad to hear the President's support for a speedy and bipartisan economic stimulus package. As I traveled around South Dakota last weekend, I heard from a number of people who not only believe we need to act quickly to head off an economic downturn, but who were pleasantly surprised at the ability of Congress and the White House to work together. I couldn't agree more, and I hope that we can continue to search for more areas of common ground and common purpose over the next year.

"I was disappointed, however, that the President did not call for a similar bipartisan effort to pass the Farm Bill - a critical piece of legislation that will impact not just every family in South Dakota but families and communities throughout rural America. On the very day that the Senate confirmed North Dakotan Ed Schafer as the new Secretary of Agriculture, I wish the President would have highlighted the importance of moving forward on the Farm Bill to ensure this good bill becomes law for our nation's producers.

“Finally, I fully agree with the President that we have a responsibility to provide for our veterans. In particular, I was pleased to hear him express support for proposals that would allow veterans to transfer unused education benefits to spouses and children. As chairwoman of the Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, I will continue to advocate on behalf of the needs of the men and women who have bravely served our nation.

"Whether it's an economic stimulus package, a new Farm Bill, resources for the brave men and women who serve in uniform, or renewable energy policy, we have plenty of areas to agree on over the next year, and I will continue to work with people from both parties on behalf of priorities for our state."

Herseth Sandlin attended the State of the Union address, held tonight in the U.S. House of Representatives chamber of the U.S. Capitol.
