Congressman Brown Named as the Ranking Republican Member on the Natural Resources' Subcommitee on Fisheries, Wildlife and Ocean

Washington, Feb 1 - Natural Resources Committee Ranking Republican Member Don Young (R-AK) today announced that Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. (R-SC) has been named the new Ranking Republican Member on the Committee’s Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife and Oceans for the 110th Congress.

“I’m honored and thankful that Ranking Republican Member Young has given me the opportunity to serve as the leading Republican on the Fisheries, Wildlife and Oceans Subcommittee,” Congressman Brown stated. “The delicate balance of the environment and the ocean is very important to coastal South Carolina. Indicative of that emphasis are the programs for research and development of aquaculture being performed at Fort Johnson.”

Continuing, Brown said, “I will push for protection of the domestic seafood and shellfish industries which help the fisheries communities in coastal South Carolina. I believe that there are innovative solutions to the problems facing the fishing industry and this position will allow me to play an instrumental role in finding and implementing those solutions for the good of consumers and the industry.”

“I look forward to working with Delegate Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam), who will serve as the Subcommittee’s Chairwoman as well as Full Committee Ranking Republican Don Young, Full Committee Chairman Nick Rahall (D-WV), and the rest of the House Natural Resources Committee to ensure a successful and productive 110th Congress.” Brown will also serve on the National Parks, Forests and Public Lands Subcommittee.

The Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife and Oceans has the responsibility for overseeing issues relating to fisheries management, wildlife resources, coastal barrier protection and coastal zone management, and marine sanctuaries, among other areas.

Congressman Brown will also continue to serve on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (Subcommittees on Highways and Transit, Water Resources, and Railroads), and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee (Subcommittee on Health). With the change in leadership and ratios between Democrats and Republicans in the House, Brown will be one of a small number of Republicans to serve on three committees.
