BUCHANAN SECURES APPROVAL OF FEDERAL FUNDS FOR NEW COLLEGE

House Slated To Approve $575,000 for Public Liberal Arts College
TUESDAY, JULY 17, 2007

Washington, DC -- Congressman Vern Buchanan (R-FL 13) has secured key approval of federal funding for New College of Florida.  The Congressman announced today that the fiscal year 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Act includes $575,000 in federal funding the freshman lawmaker requested for the public liberal arts college.

“New College is an independent public honors college of national recognition,” said Buchanan.  “It is poised to become an information hub for all the higher education institutions and the citizens of the counties they serve.  This funding will enhance educational resources available to students, faculty, staff and the community as a whole.”

Dr. Gordon Michalson, President of New College of Florida said, “As a national leader in undergraduate research education, New College of Florida has an established record of making excellent use of federal funding for targeted, high quality research efforts.  We are very grateful to Congressman Buchanan for his advocacy of our mission and his efforts on our behalf.”

The House is expected to pass the annual education-health-labor spending bill within the next two weeks.  It includes the following district projects sought by Buchanan for New College:

• $100,000 for a Smart Library at New College to help engage and enhance the digital assets available to students, faculty, staff and the community at the Jane Bancroft Cook Library;
• $225,000 Public Archeology Laboratory equipment to help collect, preserve and present the region’s history and heritage; and
• $250,000 for a Strategic Languages Resource Center to provide digital resources, facilities, and administrative support for language instruction and learning in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
