BUCHANAN OPPOSES SENATE IMMIGRATION BILL

May 21, 2007

Washington, DC -- Congressman Vern Buchanan released the following statement today opposing the immigration bill headed to the floor of the Senate this week.

“President Bush and Senate negotiators are wrong on this issue,” said Buchanan.  “The recently reached agreement rejects the rule of law by granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants.   That is unfair to those who have entered our country legally and an affront to the laws that we have established governing immigration and citizenship.”

Buchanan added that Congress should focus its attention on strengthening U.S. Customs and Border Protection to secure our borders.

“Instead of rewarding illegal behavior, we need to crack down on illegal immigration and secure the border.  Leaders in the House should immediately reject the Senate agreement and heed the American people’s call for securing our borders first.  Border security must be our highest priority,” concluded Buchanan.
