  Power Systems Development Facility

The objectives of the work at the Power Systems Development Facility (PSDF) are two-fold; development of the Transport Gasifier for a wide range of US coals from high sodium lignite to Midwestern bituminous and provide a test platform to test various critical components that are likely to appear in future advanced coal-based power facilities producing power and fuels such as hydrogen with zero emissions. With regard to the development of the Transport Gasifier, this project is to test new process configurations and syngas generating systems at a pilot plant large enough to provide data for scale up to demonstration or first commercial plants having the Transport Reactor as the Gasifier. An air blown unit for power production was selected in the last CCPI round.

The PSDF is recognized by equipment vendors, process developers, generators of electric power and syngas suppliers as the best place to test new components and integrated process configurations for advanced systems. It operates in either oxygen blown or air blown modes. The PSDF will ultimately lead to a significant decrease in the cost of producing electricity and syngas from gasification of fossil fuels while meeting the stricter environmental standards that are expected in the future.

The Project Team includes Southern Company Services, KBR, Southern Research Institute, Peabody Energy, Lignite Energy Council, Siemens Power Generation, Electric Power Research Institute, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation. Click here to go to the PSDF website.
