Hoyer Statement on Announcement of Lease Sale in National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced that they are taking action to hold a major lease sale in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NRP-A) this fall.  This announcement comes the day before the DRILL Act comes to the House Floor, which will call on BLM to speed the development of oil and gas resources in the NPR-A:

“This announcement shows that Democrats are right to push for a rapid leasing of the NPR-A, which is known to contain significant reserves of oil and natural gas.  In addition to the acreage the Administration will offer for lease this fall, there are other areas in the NPR-A with completed environmental reviews that could be offered.  Republicans should join us in supporting the DRILL Act tomorrow that will ensure that we quickly and responsibly access our resources.

“Also critical to increasing domestic supply, the DRILL Act will facilitate construction of Alaskan pipelines to deliver oil and gas to market.

"Finally, contrary to some claims, Democrats' “6 for '06” energy legislation actually encouraged oil companies to act on their leases within the NPR-A for the benefit of American consumers and we are continuing that effort with the DRILL Act.”
