Guide to the
2002 Economic Census


2002 Economic Census on DVD-ROM

All of the data from the 2002 Economic Census have been released on DVD-ROM. The final disc, Disc 1E, was issued in January 2007, and supersedes discs 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D. Disc 1Z, ZIP Code Statistics, is a single volume that became available in April 2007. Data for 1997, 1992, and 1987 are available on separate CD-ROMs.

Sophisticated Windows-based software is included on each DVD.
Quick Reports Key data for a particular geographic area, industry, or product.
Search You can search for industries, areas, or data items by name. No need to learn NAICS codes first.
Query and Display Scroll through the full detail available and customize your report through a sophisticated browse and query system.
Help Comprehensive help and explanatory information about the data are available throughout the system.
Update System You can add data released since the publication of the DVD and retrieve any software updates automatically from an FTP site.
Maps View maps in PDF-format for each geographic area recognized in the Economic Census.
Data format Files are stored in .mdb (Microsoft Access®) format, but the software will allow you to:
  • export to ASCII, flat or delimited
  • export to spreadsheet or database formats
  • export to HTML format - You can easily republish selected data on your own Internet site

Why not just use the Internet?

All of the same Economic Census data are also accessible on the Internet through the American FactFinder (AFF), free.

DVD-ROM advantages

  • You don't need an Internet hookup.
  • DVD-ROM software imposes no limits on the size of files to be dowloaded. (AFF limits downloaded files to 60,000 lines.)
  • DVD-ROM data retrieval can be faster.
  • DVD-ROM software includes additional functionality, such as
    - Toggling between industry comparisons and area comparisons
    - Adding your own calculations to the data
  • Explanatory information and other metadata are better integrated with the data.
  • DVD-ROM software supports more than 20 file export formats not included on AFF, including flat ASCII, dBase (.dbf), 123 (.wk*), and .html formats

Industry Series data for all Economic Census industries. Geographic Area Series data for a few states for selected Economic Census sectors. Data from the 2002 Nonemployer Statistics report. Data from the Economic Censuses of Island Areas for the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

1997, 1992, and 1987 CD-ROMs   Similar data are available from the 1997, 1992, and 1987 Economic Censuses, but there are a number of comparability issues, most notably the switch from SIC to NAICS between 1992 and 1997. Data from 1997 are in MS Access (.mdb) format, with software similar to Econ02 included. Data from 1992 and 1987 are available in .dbf format, with MS-DOS-based EXTRACT software included. Ordering Information

Orders are now being accepted for 2002 Economic Census DVD-ROM Volume 1E and for Volume 1Z.


Software Updates

Each issuance of each volume features a revised software application. When you receive a new disc, uninstall the old version of the application and re-install the new version.

In the application, you can select Help>Check online>Software update to check this site for a newer version of the software, and, if available, you will be prompted to download it. You may also manually download the latest version of the software (3/30/2005, 1.7mb ZIP).
