Introduction

The President signed the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act of 2006 into law on August 12, 2006. The new Act will provide an increased focus on the academic achievement of career and technical education students, strengthen the connections between secondary and postsecondary education, and improve state and local accountability. This page provides current information on the Department's efforts to implement the new Act.

By a bipartisan vote of 399-1, the U.S. House of Representatives agreed to the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2006 conference report on July 29, 2006. This action follows U.S. Senate agreement of the conference report by unanimous consent on July 26, 2006.

Vocational and Technical Education for the Future Act (H.R. 366)

Education Committee Approves Castle Bill to Help States and Schools Improve Vocational and Technical Education, Strengthen Opportunities for Students. The U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce on March 9, 2005 gave bipartisan approval to legislation introduced by Rep. Mike Castle (R-DE).

Hearing on H.R. 366 the Vocational and Technical Education for the Future Act (February 15, 2005)

The House Subcommittee on Education Reform held a hearing to discuss "H.R. 366 the Vocational and Technical Education for the Future Act". Five witnesses testified.

John Boehner (R-OH), the chair of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, introduced the Vocational and Technical Education for the Future Act (H.R. 366), legislation that would reauthorize and improve the Perkins Act. Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2005 (S.250)

On March 9, 2005 at its mark-up of the bill, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted unanimously to approve S. 250, the "Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2005".

On February 1, 2005, chair of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, introduced the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act of 2005, legislation that would reauthorize and improve the Perkins Act.
