Broun's Four-Way Test
I am committed to protecting the constitutional rights and pocketbooks of every American. I will apply the following four-way test to every piece of legislation that comes before the House for a vote:

1) Is it Moral / Right?                 3) Is it Necessary?
2) Is it Constitutional?                4) Is it Affordable?

Congressman Broun Defends Traditional Marriage Against Judicial Activists

Broun:  “Americans must stand united to send a clear message that marriage is, and shall remain, a union between a man and a woman.”

June 16, 2008

Washington D.C.-  Beginning at 5:00 p.m. today, the most recent judicial assault on the American way of life will take effect in California.  On May 15th, the California Supreme Court’s 4-3 decision to allow same sex marriage overturned a state vote in which over 61 percent of voters chose to outlaw homosexual marriage – by a 1.7 million vote margin of victory.  The California Supreme Court decision will unilaterally create a new right that cannot be found in either the state or federal Constitutions.  In fact, no state has ever legislatively enacted homosexual marriage.

In response to this blatant disregard for the will of the people, Congressman Paul Broun introduced the Marriage Protection Amendment. He released the following statement this morning:

“There is no worse attack on our democratic system or on the sovereignty of the people as when an activist court decides that four votes mean more than the votes of four million,” said Broun.  “In the wake of the second decision in which state judges have thwarted the will of the people, Americans must stand united to send a clear message that marriage is, and shall remain, a union between a man and a woman.”

“The recent ruling from the California Supreme Court is symptomatic of a much deeper and more insidious malignancy, namely, judges who refuse to submit to the rule of law, and are willing to twist the Constitutions of our land to establish an oligarchic tyranny over this nation.  The obvious cure for this problem is for the people to reclaim their political power through voting to overturn these heavy-handed rulings.”
