Washington D.C.- Congressman Paul C. Broun, M.D. today applauds the twenty-two student-athletes and coaches from the University of Georgia for proudly representing the United States and other nations in the Beijing Olympics.
These student-athletes turned in superior performances in their competitions and provided admirable representation of their various countries. Two coaches from UGA, Jack Bauerle (Head Coach, Women’s Swimming) and Dan Laak (Assistant Coach, Diving), both contributed to impressive U.S. Olympic Team performances.
“Once again, the Olympics have provided a stage for University of Georgia student-athletes to represent their respective countries,” proclaimed Broun. “UGA is known around the world for its research and scholarly works. Now, perhaps it will also gain recognition for its great American and international competitors.”
UGA student-athletes represented twelve different countries and territories at the Beijing Olympics. Those countries are: the United States, Argentina, the Bahamas, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Grenada, Iceland, South Africa, St. Lucia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Of the UGA student-athletes, Kara Lynn Joyce won a Silver medal, Allison Schmitt won a Bronze medal, and Hyleas Fountain also won a Silver medal.
