Toccoa, GA- U.S. Congressman Paul Broun congratulated Matthew Wilson Jones, of Rabun Gap, Georgia, on his prestigious appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Jones, age 18, is one of eight high school or college students who Congressman Broun recommended for appointment to America’s military academies. Broun made his selections after consulting with members of his Service Academy Board.
"My Service Academy Board’s decision was based on academic excellence, leadership capabilities and career goals. Jones has the character and commitment it takes to lead to a successful military career,” said Broun. “Being nominated and then selected to one of our nation’s military academies is an impressive accomplishment. As a Marine and Navy veteran, I am proud to represent Jones in Congress.”
Jones said he has dreamed of joining the military since childhood, and he has prepared himself both physically and mentally for the rigors of service. Jones served as a missionary to Mexico on several occasions. He participates in Varsity Cross Country and Varsity Basketball, and he has received numerous academic awards. Jones currently serves as Head Prefect, the top student leadership position selected by his highs school student body and faculty. Jones will graduate from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School on May 31, 2008.
Jones joins a growing list of Broun’s 2007 academy nominees to receive a military appointment. Paul Maile, of Martinez, also received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, in addition to appointments to the United States Military Academy at West Point and the United States Air Force Academy. Pablo Rivera, of Martinez, and Richard Jayson McConnell, of Clayton, both received appointments last month to West Point.
