Galesburg Register-Mail: Hare rips toy companies over sub-standard imports

GALESBURG-Congressman Phil Hare, D-Rock Island, criticized major toy companies, as well as the Bush administration, for not doing more to stop the flow of sub-standard imported goods into the U.S., including toys with excessive lead content and tainted food.

Referring to Mattel toys that were recalled, Hare, speaking this morning at the United Steelworkers of America Local 685 union hall, said, “I am appalled that companies like Mattel didn’t do anything about this until they were hauled before Congress. ... A parent has every right when they go out and purchase toys for their children to expect these toys are safe.”

Hare commended the Steelworkers for taking the lead in trying to bring about public awareness of the issue.

He also called for a level playing field when trade agreements are negotiated between the U.S. and other countries.

“I think if a company knowingly puts out a product they know is unsafe, they should be held legally accountable,” he said.

Hare is a co-sponsor of legislation in the House to attempt to prevent everything — from toys with too much lead in their paint to pickles packed in formaldehyde — from ending up the hands of consumers.

Parents were invited to bring toys to the union hall to be tested for lead. They also were given kits to determine if their children’s toys at home are safe.
