Thanks so much, Susan and Johan for providing resources for math for adults who must meet math requirements before they can move on to job training or vocational education.  I had forgotten about the EMPower series and will check out the Visual Math that Susan mentioned.  I was intrigued by the Symphony Learning Math software program and was wondering if anyone had used it with adults and what their insights were

I know of a few resources that might be useful:

The EMPower series of math texts includes on title specifically on algebraic thinking: Seeking Patterns, Building Rules. 

Myrna Manley also addresses it in The GED Math Problem Solver.

 

Both of these books were specifically designed for adult learners. Another source of accessible materials that were developed for K-12, but rely upon useful visual models to help build comprehension of mathematical priciples are the Visual Math resources from the Math Learning Center at Portland State University.

What great resources - I had no idea!  Thanks so much 

 

I have a further question (and apologize for high jacking this particular thread) 

 

Do you (or anyone) have resources for making algebra and geometry accessible to students who didn't take to math in regular school but now need math as a prerequisite to get into training for the jobs they would really like to have (carpentry - both algebra and geometry are required; nursing (algebra and chemistry math)

 

Adult students ready to transition to occupational training often flunk out of these classes because they are taught fairly disconnected from what students are good at (experiential stuff). 

 

I know some college instructors who would love to make math concepts come alive for their non-traditional students but don't know where to go for resources. 

 

Any ideas?
