The Learner Perspectives section of the Adult Literacy Education Wiki has
recently been updated. This section of the wiki contains an area where
students can try out their online skills by posting their comments in a
forum or by reviewing computer programs (as part of an online survey). The
page has directions for how to add and edit text, so that learners and/or
their teachers can become familiar with the process of participating in a
wiki. The forum has yet to be used, so your learners could be the first! It
would be great for a class working on their computer skills.

The Learner Perspective section also has links to publications that contain
student writing and links to some mp3s (which have learners telling their
own stories). This section also has a place where programs or publications
can post calls for student writing (such as the recent call for Women's
Perspectives #3 (2008) / Women & Money).

The address for this section is
http://wiki.literacytent.org/index.php/Learner_Perspectives.

graduate with their GED and go to college. I have a student who is in
college and is doing a paper on GED grads who go on to college and I
can't find that article... I have been watching the prof. dialogue and
thought I ask the world. Thank you very much-

I know it is about 19% in Kentucky and you can look on the Council for
Postsecondary Education webpage for articles and details--I believe they
have national statistics as well. (just google Kentucky CPE). THe "Double
the Numbers" report will give you some good data.

One statistic that was being tossed around in '06 was that 7%? (that's
right-- .07)? of GED completers went on to SOME kind of post secondary
education or training and completed THAT.??? If you want to look at a much
higher rate. contact Santa Fe Community College, which has hugely increased
that number.?

I would be interested to know what percent of that 7% were students who
took the GED because they were too bored or otherwise unhappy in high school
and decided to just get the GED and get it over with so they could get on to
college. ? I actually know several of those people.?

This low continuation rate sparked an interesting conversation on the LD
listserve and FOB I think, on what happens in GED programs and what could be
done to help GED completers to continue on. The transition discussion on one
of these listservs addressed many issues connected to helping GED students
continue their education or training.??

Colleagues,

One of the best repositories of information on GED research,
including GED earnings research results, is the Adult Literacy
Education (ALE) Wiki GED Research topic area:

http://wiki.literacytent.org/index.php/GED_Research

Here, for example, is the Questions section (with answers on the ALE
Wiki):

1. Does obtaining a GED lead to increased earnings?

2. Is there research about basic skills students who seem to have a
fear of finishing (getting their GED)?

3. Are "Fast Track" GED Programs a good investment?

4. How many GED students go on to participate in some amount of
postsecondary education? How many complete a 2 year degree, and how
many complete a 4 year degree?

5. Is there any research out there on open entry/open exit vs.
managed enrollment?

You'll also find sections on discussion, research, resources and a
glossary.

If you know of research that is not cited here, you can add it
yourself (and we hope you will) -- it's a wiki! You can also add
resources and comments, too.

Hi, our web site is, www.ruidoso.enmu.edu... We are a small community
college in the middle of New Mexico. Of the graduates we are able to
track from '06, we have a 41% continuance to postsecondary. My program
is directly affiliated with the college and we have a great working
relationship.

Wiki

The Learner Perspectives section of the Adult Literacy Education Wiki
has recently been updated. This section of the wiki contains an area
where students can try out their online skills by posting their comments
in a forum or by reviewing computer programs (as part of an online
survey). The page has directions for how to add and edit text, so that
learners and/or their teachers can become familiar with the process of
participating in a wiki. The forum has yet to be used, so your learners
could be the first! It would be great for a class working on their
computer skills.

The Learner Perspective section also has links to publications that
contain student writing and links to some mp3s (which have learners
telling their own stories). This section also has a place where programs
or publications can post calls for student writing (such as the recent
call for Women's Perspectives #3 (2008) / Women & Money).

The address for this section is
http://wiki.literacytent.org/index.php/Learner_Perspectives.

Melinda,

In April of 2007 I wrote an article for the Texas AE journal about
transitioning GED completers to post-secondary.

You can find "After the GED: Helping Students Take the Next Step" on the
TCALL Web site at http://www-tcall.tamu.edu/newsletr/apr07/apr07k.html
I noted statistics from several research studies and reviewed resources
for teachers and administrators. You may find some useful leads in the
resources at the end of the article.
