Dear Greg and the list:

What a fun question to answer. Off the top of my head,
here are some of the big names who have been helpful
to me in my 20+ years in the field. I am sure I have
left some good ones out. (I am a
progressive-education, student-centered,
participatory-learning kind of guy, by the way):

General learning and language acquisition including
written language:
Vygotsky
Bruner
Dewey
Piaget
George Kelly
Labov
Shirley Brice Heath

Teaching--not neccessarily for adults but useful to
me:
Frank Smith (probably my #1 for reading)
Peter Elbow (writing)
Yetta Goodman (reading)
Constance Weaver (reading)
Lucy Calkins (writing)
Sondra Perl (writing)
James Moffett (student-centered teaching)

More specific to adult literacy:
Paulo Freire
James Gee
Tom Stitch
Walter Ong
Scribner and Coles
Victoria Purcell-Gates
Laurence Mishell
John Ogbu
Michael J. Parker
David Rosen
