program decisions

*Session #2*

* *

*For program managers, coordinators, and instructional staff/volunteers:*

*Models and Strategies for Adult Transitions*

Students succeed in your classrooms.

*Are they ready for what's next? Are you ready to help them?*

Students who succeed in one academic environment may struggle in another.
They need support as they learn about new systems and develop life skills so
they can continue their education. For example, we know that college pays
off for GED holders, but research also shows that only one-third of GED
students go on to college, and just 10 percent finish at least one year of
postsecondary education. Less than 3 percent of all adult learners earn an
associate degree. (Source: J. H. Tyler, * The Economic Benefits of the GED:
Lessons from Recent Research*, 2002).

In this workshop, you will:

n Take a poignant, fun, and user-friendly trip through the research on adult
transitions

n Identify important elements of transition programming

n Apply the information to your program, design next steps, and get feedback
from colleagues

*Presenter: * Cynthia Zafft, director, National College Transitions Network,
a project of World Education, Inc.

*Registration fee: $127 for ProLiteracy and COABE affiliates; $149 for
non-affiliates (Registration fee includes networking reception, breakfast
forum, and lunch.)*

*Session #3*

* *

*For program managers, trainers, and instructional staff/ volunteers:*

*Student Retention Through Student Success*

*How do your students' emotions and attitudes affect their ability to "stay
the course"?*

*How do your assessment practices impact students' retention?*

Students are motivated when they see progress. Showing them that they can
be—and indeed, have been—successful supports their decision to stay with a
learning program. In this workshop, we'll talk about the supports that
affect adult student persistence, as identified by research from the
National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy (NCSALL). We'll
also apply these supports to your programs and classrooms.

In this workshop you will:

n Describe how students' self-efficacy influences their persistence

n Identify research-based categories of support for students' self-efficacy

n Explore strategies to monitor students' progress toward meeting goals

n Apply what you learned about self-efficacy and showing student progress to
a case study and your students.

*Presenter:* Jane Greiner, professional development coordinator,
ProLiteracy

*Registration fee:* * *$127 for ProLiteracy and COABE affiliates; $149 for
non-affiliates (Registration fee includes networking reception, breakfast
forum, and lunch.)
