Do you ever wonder what the odds are that you’ll get the conditions your grandparents had?
The NN/LM SCR is offering the class ABCs of DNA: Unraveling the Mystery of Genetics Information for Consumers at the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, Houston, TX on February 12, 2009.
This class explores basic concepts such as genes and chromosomes and offers an overview of genetic disorders, genetic testing, genetic counseling, and the Human Genome Project. Ethical and legal issues associated with genetic disorders will be covered with regard to privacy, discrimination, and potential legislative impact on medicine and society. A variety of reliable health information resources will be demonstrated. This 4-hour hands-on class is intended for librarians, educators and the general public.

Two Can You Hear Me Now? How to Make a Podcast class sessions will be offered February 19, 2009 in Dallas, TX at the UT Southwestern Medical Center Library. It will be offered in English in the morning and Chinese in the afternoon. This hands-on class is designed to provide a fun yet informative introduction to what is podcasting and how you can utilize this technology in your library services, to enable your users to access the information whenever they want, wherever they want and however they want it. Basic steps and suggestions on how to make a podcast will be covered and students will be able to enjoy hands-on practice on popular audio recording and editing software and make their first personal podcast! This course has been approved for 2 hours of Medical Library Association (MLA) Continuing Education credits.

The NN/LM SCR will be offering the class Getting the Best out of DOCLINE at the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library, Houston, TX on Monday, February 9, 2009 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.

Investigators or sponsors for certain clinical trials are required to submit basic results data to ClinicalTrials.gov. In addition, links to published results are currently available in ClinicalTrials.gov. Do you know how to access this information?
The National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC) will be teaching the class NLM Gateway and ClinicalTrials.gov on February 2, 2009 from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library in Houston, TX. In addition to ClinicalTrials.gov, this class also covers the NLM Gateway database which allows users to search multiple NLM databases in a single search.

The NN/LM SCR is offering the class ¿No Comprende? Spanish Health Information Resources for English Speaking Librarians on January 7, 2008 at McNeese State University, Frazar Memorial Library, in Lake Charles, LA. The class will be held from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. There is no charge for this class.

Do you have a growing Latino population in your community? Do you need to find health information in Spanish fast but don’t know where to look? This 4-hour hands-on class will cover resources for learning basic, library, medical, and Internet Spanish vocabulary. You will also learn to evaluate and identify health websites in Spanish to which you can direct your patrons. Upon successful completion of this class, each participant will receive 4 hours of continuing education credit awarded by the Medical Library Association.

Join a demonstration of the Valuing Library Services and Cost Benefit/Return On Investment Calculators on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 2pm Eastern Time, 1pm Central. Barb Jones and Betsy Kelly from the MidContinental Region, NN/LM will reprise their MLA presentation on these tools to enable health science librarians to determine the return on investment and cost benefit of their libraries and services. Come with some numbers to discuss how you can use the online calculators to show the value your library brings to your institution.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has a new online tutorial, Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) Basics, now available at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/umls/online%20learning/index.htm.
The course offers an online introduction to the UMLS and should take users approximately two hours to complete. It is designed for novice UMLS users who have some knowledge of controlled vocabularies and related topics. It covers some of the material presented in the UMLS Basics one day course taught at the NLM.

Beginning in November, the NN/LM SCR will be offering a monthly web conference entitled “SCR CONNECTions.” The conference will take place the third Wednesday of each month from 10:30 am - 11:30 am Central Time. Each month we will cover a different topic. Topics will include: National Library of Medicine database training, NN/LM SCR updates, proposal writing and new technology trends.
The web conferences are conducted via the Adobe Connect web meeting system, and no special software needs to be installed on your computer.
Our first session will take place on November 19, 2008.
