December 15, 2008: Forest Headquarters Early Closure
Due to hazardous driving conditions, the Siuslaw National Forest Headquarters in Corvallis will close at 2 p.m. Monday, December 15 and re-open at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 16.

December 11, 2008: Marys Peak Road Closure
A severe cold front predicted for this weekend that includes heavy wind and snow fall in the Coast Range has prompted Siuslaw National Forest officials to limit access to Marys Peak.

December 10, 2008: Cape Perpetua Open for the Holidays
Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the holiday season, with the exception of December 24 and 25. A great selection of books and gifts with a local coastal theme are available for purchase at the center’s book store.

December 4, 2008: Temporary Road Closure/North Fork Siuslaw
A small section of national forest road located approximately 12 miles northeast of Florence will be temporarily closed.

December 1, 2008: Oregon Pacific Coast Passport Holiday Discount
Oregon Pacific Coast Passports will again be on sale at a $5 discount beginning December 1. As in past years, the $35 annual passport will be sold for $30 during the month of December, according to Mike Harvey, Siuslaw National Forest Recreation Staff Officer.

November 24, 2008: Christmas Tree Permits for Sale
The Siuslaw National Forest will begin selling Christmas tree permits November 24. Permits cost $5.00 each, which allows the permit holder to cut one tree for personal use.

November 14, 2008: Storm Causes Minor Damage to Forest Roads
Heavy rain and flooding throughout Tillamook and Lincoln County left trees, branches, and debris in most roadways on the Hebo Ranger District. However, storm damage overall was relatively minor with only one road closed to protect public safety.

October 31, 2008: Recreation Fees Waived on Veterans Day, Nov. 11
The public may visit [some] federal recreation sites for free on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11.

October 30, 2008: Theft at South Jetty
Two suspects were caught Friday night while attempting to remove fee envelopes from a recreation fee site on national forest land.

October 30, 2008: Reconstruction Road Work Temporarily Closes Gopher Creek Road
Gopher Creek Road will be closed for approximately one month while reconstruction work occurs.

October 23, 2008: Tough Year for Snowy Plovers on Oregon Coast
The number of young western snowy plovers fledged on the Oregon Coast this year was the lowest since 2003.

October 10, 2008: Kentucky Falls Trail Closure
The Kentucky Falls trailhead and trail, located 17 miles south of Mapleton, will be temporarily closed to the public while crews work to replace two large trail bridges. The project began Wednesday, October 8, 2008, and should be completed by October 30, 2008, or sooner.

October 9, 2008: Increased Fees Proposed at Hebo Lake and Sand Lake
The Hebo Ranger District proposes increasing fees in the campgrounds at Hebo Lake and Sand Lake Recreation Area. Nate Lewis, Recreation Staff, at the Hebo Ranger District is interested in hearing public comments about the proposed increase.

September 29, 2008: Sandy Way Work Scheduled
The Sandy Way access to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, located 18 miles south of Reedsport near Hauser Depot Road, will be temporarily closed to the public while crews work to pave an intersection west of the railroad . The project scheduled for this week, will have intermittent site closures Tuesday, September 30, 2008, and be completely closed from 8 am to 5 pm Wednesday October 1, 2008.

September 19, 2008: September 27 and 28 ~ Fee Free Days on the Siuslaw
On Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, the Siuslaw National Forest will join other national forests throughout the nation by waiving recreation fees at day-use sites managed by the National Forest.

September 18, 2008: Hebo Ranger District Resumes Sale of Firewood Permits
The Hebo Ranger District is once again issuing personal use firewood permits to the public.

September 18, 2008: No Special Forest Products Sales ~ Oct.1 – Oct 3
The Siuslaw National Forest will not sell any forest products permits from Wednesday, October 1 through Friday, Oct 3.

September 15, 2008: Tahkenitch Creek Trail Work Scheduled
The Tahkenitch Creek Trailhead and Trail, located 17 miles south of Florence, will be temporarily closed to the public while crews work to relocate a bridge to a more stable location.

September 15, 2008: Cape Perpetua Moves To Off-Season Hours
The Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will be open daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. beginning Monday, Sept. 22. Interpretive programs, nature films or guided hikes are offered every hour on the hour.

September 12, 2008: Forest Road 5590 to Close For Maintenance
Forest Road 5590 is scheduled to be closed to the public while crews apply a slurry seal to the road bed.

August 4, 2008: Curfew, Other Changes Initiated For Sand Lake Recreation Area
Due to the need to address public safety and sanitation issues at Sand Lake Recreation Area, the Siuslaw National Forest will implement two special forest orders beginning Monday, September 1, 2008.

July 31, 2008: Oregon Dunes Offering Guided Tours
Want to learn more about the Oregon Dunes while enjoying the open air? The Oregon Dunes National Recreation will be offering guided ATV tours every Saturday beginning August 9, running through mid-September.

July 28, 2008: Tidepool Discovery Days August 2-3
The third and final Tidepool Discovery Days of the summer will be offered from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, and Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area three miles south of Yachats.

July 18, 2008: Siuslaw National Forest Enacts Fire Restrictions
Due to increasing temperatures along the Oregon Coast and throughout the West, the Siuslaw National Forest will be implementing special fire regulations beginning Monday, July 21, 2008.

July 2, 2008: Oregon Dunes Prohibits Parking July 6 - July15
Citing concerns for public and employee safety, and resource protection, managers at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area will prohibit day-use parking in the Horsfall and Hauser open sand riding areas between July 6, 2008 and July 15, 2008.

June 30, 2008: Fireworks not Permitted on National Forest Lands
With the July 4th holiday weekend approaching, here are a couple reminders for visitors of the Siuslaw National Forest.

June 25, 2008: Tidepool Discovery Days July 5-6
Vibrant reds, greens and oranges. No it’s not the night sky lit up by fireworks. It’s the intertidal zone at Cape Perpetua!

June 24, 2008: Fire Season Begins on the Siuslaw National Forest
With predicted warm weather on the way, Carl West, Fire Management Officer for the Siuslaw National Forest announced that fire season will go into effect as of midnight Saturday, June 28.

June 23, 2008: Siuslaw National Forest Celebrates 100 Years
100 years ago this July 1, the Siuslaw National Forest was established through Executive Order by President Theodore Roosevelt. To commemorate the event employees, retirees, volunteers and their families will gather to celebrate the centennial.

June 18, 2008: Record-High Attendance at Cape Perpetua
Rising fuel costs and cooler weather hasn’t kept visitors from enjoying the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, just south of Yachats.

June 16, 2008: Big Creek Road Closed For Culvert Replacement
A project to replace three culverts on Forest Road 57, locally known as the Big Creek Road, will cause a temporary road closure.

June 3, 2008: Temporary Road Closure on Forest Road 24
A portion of Forest Road 24, located southeast of Florence, will be temporarily closed for paving and culvert replacement beginning Monday, June 2. Work is expected to take approximately 30 days to complete.

June 2, 2008: Siuslaw National Forest Shares Recreation Facilities Analysis
The Siuslaw National Forest has completed its initial work in the Recreation Facility Analysis process and is seeking input on its work-to-date from interested members of the public.

May 30, 2008: Free Fishing Event at Hebo Lake Welcomes Family and Friends
Bring your children to Hebo lake Campground Saturday, June 7 for a day of fishing and other fun activities as part of the National "Free Fishing Weekend."

May 30, 2008: Cape Perpetua to Host Tidepool Discovery Days
Come to the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area and explore the unique habitat of a variety of aquatic species. The staff and volunteers at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center will be hosting Tidepool Discovery Days on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8..

May 28, 2008: Kid's Free Fishing Events~ Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8
As part of the twentieth year of National Fishing Week, the Central Coast Ranger District-Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, Oregon State Parks and Recreation, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, other agencies and private groups, invite you to come out for a fun day of free fishing on Saturday June 7 and Sunday June 8.

May 16, 2008: Snow Continues to Blanket Marys Peak Road
Unseasonably high temperatures have been experienced throughout Oregon over the past few days. While summer seemingly has come early to much of the state, old man winter still maintains a grip on Marys Peak.

May 16, 2008: Forest Road 32 Maintenance Scheduled
Work on Forest Service Road 32 is scheduled to begin Monday, May19. The work will include patching and paving portions of the road from the junction with Forest Road 3278, known as the Gibson Tie, north approximately 3 miles.

April 2, 2008: Marys Peak Road to Remain Closed
If you’re eager to drive to the top of Marys Peak, you’ll still have a bit of a wait. Snow continues to cover the road above milepost 4, keeping forest visitors from safely getting to the top of the mountain.

March 25, 2008: Trashing Your National Forest
Driving through the forest on a pleasant afternoon you can encounter a number of natural wonders; towering Douglas-fir and majestic cedar, spruce and hemlock; clear streams cascading down lush green slopes; and elk, deer and other wildlife. Unfortunately a not-so-natural sight may also be encountered and that’s one of a number of trash dumps lining or even blocking some forest roads.

March 5, 2008: Snowy Plover Nesting Season Begins March 15
The nesting season for the western snowy plover begins on area beaches March 15 and runs through September 15.

February 26, 2008: Forest Service to Host Additional Travel Management Open House
As a way to accommodate as many people as possible interested in the travel rule proposal for future motorized access and motorized use areas on national forests, the Siuslaw National Forest will be hosting an additional open house in Albany on Saturday, March 1.

February 11, 2008: Comments Sought on West Alsea Land Management Project
The Central Coast Ranger District of the Siuslaw National Forest is seeking public comment on the preliminary analysis for the proposed West Alsea Landscape Management Project.

January 14, 2008: Forest Service to Host Travel Management Open Houses
The Siuslaw National Forest will be hosting a series of open houses in late January and early February to share its proposal for future motorized access and motorized use areas on the National Forest.

January 14, 2008:Oregon Dunes Day Use to Get Face-Lift
The Oregon Dunes Day Use Area located 10 miles south of Florence off US Highway 101 is receiving needed repairs and upgrades to existing facilities.
